I specialize in creating custom frames for museums and collectors around the world, from modern art collections to renaissance tabernacles, faithfully created replicas of antique masterpieces, and restoration work.
A wonderful opportunity to make a frame for an early work by Titian from the Kress Collection at the NCMA Museum in Raleigh NC. This tabernacle is made with traditional methods and design work in pastiglia with hand carved mouldings. Water gilt in 23 kt gold.
An amazing opportunity to make a frame for a large fresco by Botticelli. This painting is from the Kress Collection and in the permanent collection of the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia SC. This large scale arched tabernacle was made with traditional construction methods, hand carved and has traditional sgraffito ornamentation. Water gilt in 23 kt gold.
Working with Graydon on the 9.11 project was a great experience, it was challenging in its scale but very satisfying. The outer dimensions of this tabernacle are approximately 10' high and 20' wide. The frame is constructed in 24 sections that all mortise and tenon together to create one solid frame. The frame is finished with over 20 coats of traditional gesso and clay then water gilt in 12 kt gold.
The Black Walnut viewing benches were commissioned by the New Britain Museum of American Art to work as an integral part of the presentation of the 9.11 project. They are constructed in patinated Black Walnut with hand carved roses and 12 kt gold.
A frame for a wonderful painting by Vincent Van Gogh in the permanent collection of The Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco CA. This frame is hand carved in Alder wood and water gilt in 22 kt gold. Working closely with the curatorial and conservation department staff at the De Young was a great experience.
This traditionally inspired architectural tabernacle was a great match for James Gurneys wonderful painting Dinosaur Parade. Working with James was a great experience his enthusiasm was contagious for all involved from the curatorial staff at the Norman Rockwell Museum to the photographer and myself as the frame maker.
This frame for this large work by Lord Fredrick Leighton was a very satisfying frame to work on involving many facets of traditional frame making and gilding. The ornamentation utilizes both hand carved elements as well as traditional compositional ornament. The hand drawn pastiglia ornamentation is accomplished by dripping a thickened gesso onto the prepared surface in a set pattern. This frame is water gilt in 22 kt gold.
A pair of paintings by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema... framed with traditional tabernacles in water gilt 23 kt gold.
The frame for this wonderful painting by Abbott Thayer was a take on a frame style designed by American architect and designer Stanford White. The design work is executed in traditional compositional ornamentation and water gilt in 22 kt gold.
This was my first carving project... a replica of a beautifully carved Arts and Crafts frame at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. A wonderful frame with multiple designs across different planes. In this piece there is so much happening that the end result is quiet.
